How does Laser Hair Removal work?
The laser works by emitting a focused beam of light that is absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser pulses for only a fraction of a second—just long enough to vaporize the pigment and destroying the hair’s ability to re-grow. This damage impedes future growth of hair to the area affected, resulting in permanent hair reduction.
What should I expect during the treatment session?
The area to be treated should be shaved 1-2 days before the session. An anesthetic cream may be applied to minimize discomfort. During the procedure, you’ll feel emissions of light on the skin as the laser is absorbed by the hair follicles. Our laser is equipped with a patented cooling system to protect the surrounding skin and to make the procedures more comfortable.
You should expect some discomfort during the treatment that is described as a heavy rubber band snap, but the sensation varies from one individual to the next and also depends on body area.
What should I expect after the treatment?
The treated area may become slightly red and bumpy due to the swelling of the follicles shortly after the treatment. Bandages are not necessary and there is no downtime. You may experience a sunburn type sensation in the treatment area for a limited period of time. Avoid Retin-A, alpha-hydroxy acids, glycolic acids, astringents, washing with a loofah, and avoid tanning. Use of a SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on any treated area exposed to the sun is strongly recommended.
Are there any side effects? Or risks?
Blisters, burns, and pigment changes are rare but occasionally occur, particularly in patients with dark skin, and usually the changes are temporary. They are very rare in patients with fair skin who are not tanned.
How many treatments will I need?
We expect a 20 percent reduction of hair over the entire area each treatment. Therefore, we perform 4-6 treatments for optimal results. Some areas will require additional treatments for full patient satisfaction. Sessions are performed in 4 to 6 week cycles depending on various body areas treated.
Does Laser Hair Removal work on dark or tanned skin?
People with dark skin can be treated but results are slower, more sessions are needed, and greater operator expertise is required. Tanned patients with dark hair should wait until their tan fades before they are treated for best results.
Will it work on blonde, white, or gray hair?
No.
How is Laser Hair Removal superior to other hair removal alternatives?
Laser hair removal is superior to tweezing, waxing, and electrolysis because it is well tolerated by most people, covers large areas of hair growth, is long-lasting, and fast.
Who should NOT have Laser treatments?
Laser hair removal should not be performed on the following patients:
• Pregnant women
• People with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
• Active infection of herpes simplex in the treatment area
• Hypersensitivity to bleaching agents
• A history of keloid scarring.
• Use of Accutane within the preceding six months
